This bust of Gounod was originally sculpted in marble by Ross C. Adams and Carlo Nicoli and was dedicated in 1886. The marble bust has been replaced with a resin based replacement due to deterioration of the original.
Gounod was a French composer, best known for his operas Faust (1859) based on a play by Goethe and Roméo et Juliette (1867) based on a play by Shakespeare. He also composed several other operas, symphonies, and chamber music.
