The Thornburgh Mansion at 23 Portland Place was built in 1892 for William and Florence Thornburgh. William Thornburgh gained his fortune in the paint and window business, serving as the president of a firm.

The Italian Renaissance style house was designed by the architectural firm of Eames and Young. The interior of the mansion was nearly completely gutted during a fire in 1953 but was restored after the fire.
