The Hart Mansion at 19 Portland Place was built in 1893 for Augustus B. Hart and his wife Clara. Mr. Hart inherited his fathers real estate and investment company fortune. His father, Oliver A. Hart was an architect and builder credited with much of the rebuilding of St. Louis after the fire of 1849.

The red brick and stone mansion was designed by the architectural firm of Grabel & Weber in a Richardsonian Romanesque style.
