Mount Cottrell is a dormant shield volcano with a peak 165 metres
above sea level, dominating the flat plains west of Melbourne.

It is a classic shield volcano, formed as a result of numerous lava tongues that slowly
oozed from the ground without pyroclastic (explosive) eruptions.

The summit provides a great view of the western plains of Melbourne including Port Philip Bay, the You Yangs and Mount Macedon.

Access to the peak is by foot, following a dirt road. The gate is locked, but the Melton Shire Council allows access to the general public who wish to walk to the top. The gate is located at S 37° 45.791 E 144° 37.688
