The highest point in Cheshire County, New Hampshire is Mount Monadnock, or Grand Monadnock with an official elevation of 3,165 feet (965 meter) above mean sea level. Mount Monadnock is located within the towns of Jaffrey and Dublin in the southern part of New Hampshire and rises 2,000 feet (609 meter) above the surrounding landscape. On crystal clear days you are rewarded with almost 100-mile views to points in all six New England states.
"Monadnock" is an adaption of a word used by the native Abenaki people and means "special or unique mountain". Today it is a geological term that describes a residual hill that rises alone from the surrounding plain. It is sometimes called Grand Monadnock to distinguish it from other monadnocks in the area.
It is said that Mount Monadnock is one of the most frequently hiked mountains in the world. On good days the summit is packed with hikers and it is sometimes hard to find a good resting place. Most of the mountain is protected highland and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1987. Many miles of well maintained hiking trails criss-cross the mountain. Most of the trails lead to the bare rock summit through unique alpine vegetation. The most popular but shortest and steepest trail is the White Dot Trail with 2.2 miles that starts at the Monadnock State Park headquarter on the southeast side of the mountain. A round trip takes round about 4 to 6 hours and requires no technical skills during late spring to early fall season.
Monadnock State Park is open year-round. Please check out the Monadnock State Park website for directions, current fees, trail maps and further informations. Trail information and maps are also posted near the Visitor Center at the beginning of the trail. Make sure you check the weather forecast before you start your hike.
