From the inventory: "A bronze relief portrait head of Leidesdorff, surrounded by images reflecting his life and contribution to California's history -- a house, a ship, landscape and figures.
Mr. Leidesdorff was an African-American statesman in San Francisco in the early 1800s. As an orphan, he was adopted by a shipper. He later became the first person to bring a steamship to San Francisco and became a builder, entrepreneur."
The plaque is next to the doorway of a small cafe in the Leidesdorff Street. The plaque reads: "William Alexander Leidesdorff (1810-1848. Builder. Entrepreneur. Visionary. Pioneer. San Franciscan. African American."
