Back:
The station at Seneca was the Smith Hotel operated by John E. Smith. His wife Agnes made sure that the hotel was clean and that good food was served to their customers. The Hotl was located on this corner and the stable was behind it on the south side of the alley. The hotel was a two story frame building and was painted white.
Seneca became a hom station on July 1, 1860, this is where Pony Express riders then stayed.
The Pony Express started on April 3, 1860 and ended on November 20, 1861. Starting August 28, 1861 all Pony Express mail from St. Joseph to Ft. Kearny was carried by stagecoach. On September 14, 1861 the easter headquarters of the Pony Epxress company was moved from St. Joseph to Atchison, Kansas.
