Marker Name: The sea has given life since ancient times
Marker Text: For at least eight thousand years, Native Americans have lived along the Oregon Coast. Tiny villages dotted the headlands, with small bands of people making a living from the sea and headlands. With plentiful resources nearby, they traveled to visit and trade with other villages.
The people who lived here found much of what they needed from the sea. They gathered shellfish along the beaches and fished for salmon in rivers. Nearby prairies, forests and streams provided acorns, nuts, roots, berries and seeds. In the spring and summer, they gathered plants for food and fiber, and hunted for deer and elk. They dried food to store for winter, and sewed clothing from buckskin or cedarbark. Stone, bone and antlers provided material for their finely crafted tools.
Villages often had several permanent buildings constructed from vertically laid cedar planks. A doorway led down to the inside area, which was below ground. The living space was warm and confortable, protected from the damp weather. A gap in the roof planks served as a chimney.
