Several engagements of the Seven Days Battles (June 1862) took place near the location of Glendale National Cemetery. Union Gen. George B. McClellan's effort to strike Richmond stalled at Seven Pines and the new Confederate commander, Gen. Robert E. Lee, used the opportunity for a counterattack. The Seven Days Battles ended nearby at Malvern Hill. The Union had successfully completed their retreat to the James River, but Lee was unable to delivery the blow he wanted.
The Union army had a safe position at the Harrison's Landing on the James River, but they suffered tremendously from heat, humidity, and disease. President Lincoln gave the order to withdraw and reinforce the engagements in northern Virginia and the Second Battle of Bull Run.
