This 1997 $10 definitive stamp features a striking photograph of the Mt Ruapehu eruption in June 1996. Mount Ruapehu is the highest mountain (2797 metres) in the North Island of New Zealand.

Ruapehu had been showing signs of increased activity since late November 1994, and eruptions occurred in 1995 and 1996 causing lahars and disrupting air traffic with the huge ash clouds.
The skifield remained open as long as possible and we skied on the slopes with a black ash cloud above us, an eerie experience. This ended when ashfall destroyed the slopes and the mountain was closed.
This stamp issued in early 1997 shows the mountain during the 1996 eruption.
