The hippodrome, on Green Lane in Derby is a Grade II listed building, central to a saga which has involved the local Council taking lengthy legal action against the owner since 2008.
Whilst repairs were being undertaken a large part of the roof collapsed (the roof can be seen as it was prior to this, intact, on Google Maps satellite imagery). The Council ordered the owner to fully restore the building but a structural engineer the owner had commissioned to assess the premises had said it was an immediate danger to the public and must be demolished without delay. Simultaneously the owners plans to build a multi-story car park on the site emerged.
In December 2009 the hippodrome was put up for sale by its owner of two years and remains in a state of disrepair.
