The building is a brick and timber house of two stories with a projecting upper story and tiled roof. It has been much repaired, but probably dates back to the later mediaeval period. It is said to have belonged to the Knights Hospitallers, who, as rectors and lords of the manor of Standon Friars, may have had a court-house here after they had begun to grant leases of the manor in the 14th century.
In 1612 the former free school for the instruction of poor children was started in the building. Thomas Fisher and other benefactors created endowed the school with £33 per annum. According to the Victoria County History of Hertford there was still an endowed school here in 1912. The building became residential at some time in the late twentieth century.
