A Civil War soldier stands with hands at chest height clasping a gun by the barrel. The butt of the rifle rests next to his proper right foot. He is dressed in a uniform consisting of a hip-length jacket and a wide-brimmed hat. A bedroll is strapped around his torso from his proper left shoulder to his proper right hip. On his proper left side is a canteen. His proper right leg leans against a tree stump. The sculpture is mounted atop a shaft with a two-tiered bottom set upon a stepped base. A cannonball rests on top of each corner of the bottom tier. The sculpture is flanked on both sides by silver cannons on brick bases.

The sculpture was installed by the Screven County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans in tribute to Screven County soldiers who fought during the Civil War. The sculpture was dedicated on Confederate Memorial Day, April 26, 1909. McNeel Marble Works fabricated the sculpture. It was originally installed in a downtown Sylvania park, but was moved in 1950 when the city turned the park into a parking lot.
