The Marion County Courthouse is located in the public square in Knoxville, Iowa. The current courthouse is the third for the county replacing a brick courthouse built in 1858 and deemed unsafe in 1895. The current courthouse was was built in 1896. The building was designed by architect M.E. Bell in the Richardson Romanesque style and is constructed of from Berea limestone. The county had proposed a new courthouse in the 1960s but voters turned it down and the building was restored and renovated beginning in 1972. The courthouse was was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
