Songkhla is the capital city of the southern Thai province of Songkhla. It is a small, beach side town. One of the attractions of the city, found on the sea shore, is a statue of "The Great Serpent"—Naga, a religious identity found throughout southeast Asia.
The Nag was emplaced in 2007, at the instigation of the town mayor, who wished to bring happieness and good fortune to the population of the town.
From the plaque:
The Nag and water were the creation of the all things. The spraying water brings health, good luck, happiness, and washes away sins. The Nag is highly respected in southern Thailand.
