A central cultural, religious and political feature of most Thai provinces is the 'City Pillar Shrine'. This shrine is the (metaphorical) centre point for each province, and the distance marker for travel to and from the province. The shrine for the province of Songkhla is in the town of Songkhla. As is customary, each province and provincial capital share a common name, however, while the city of Songkhla is the capital, it is not the largest city in the province. The newer and nearby city of Hat Yai (~30kms) is the economic and population powerhouse of the province, and region.

As with most Thai religious institutions, the shrine has bells. Here there are only two, and they are both rather small, however, they are bells, and they are designed to be rung by both visitors and celebrants. The bells are located inside the main shrine building.
