This siren is located in Hollywood, California on Van Ness Avenue, just south of Sunset Blvd. In the background, you can see the original broadcasting tower for KTLA Channel 5. Tribune Studios and Channel 5 share a small studio lot here.
I spent some of my early years, from 1961 to 1965, in the nearby San Fernando Valley and do recall the occasional Civil Defense drills and siren tests. Los Angeles was a primary Soviet nuclear bomb target during the cold war. A lot of aerospace companies, airports and a scattering of military installations made this area a tempting target for the Reds.
