Petrified Wood Gas Station - Lamar, Colorado - Odd-Shaped Buildings on Waymarking.com

Hoping to sidetrack tourists traveling along US 287 on their way through Lamar, Colorado to the Rocky Mountains, lumber dealer W. G. Brown built a one-of-a-kind petrified wood gas station in 1932.

Flame-resistant and fireproof, the structure is made entirely of 175,000,000-year-old petrified wood and is still a sight to be seen. "Ripley's Believe It or Not" claims it's the only such structure in the world. It even says so on the front of the building :

The largest piece of wood used in the station weights in at 3,200 hundred pounds. The building walls and floors are constructed of large pieces of petrified wood too.

The station became a tire store in 1962 and now is a tire store and a used car lot. If only the cars would last as long as the building!
