The Haines Apple Tree marks the site of the Haines Homestead and was planted by the family in 1852 or 1854.
Marker Name: October 9, 1855
Marker Text: Josephine County Historical Society Homestead where the Haines Family were massacred. Mr. Haines was found murdered and scalped. His young sons were killed with tomahawks. Mrs. Haines and a daughter were taken captive. Later killed and their bodies thrown into the Rogue River near Hellsgate. Volunteer militia found this horrible scene duplicated many times in the Rogue River Valley on that tragic day.
