This monument is dedicated to Staff Sergent Dewey L. Johnson of Laurens County Georgia who was killed while attempting to rescue the hostages held in Iran in 1980.
Text of the monument:
Staff Sergeant Dewy L. Johnson of Laurens County Georgia distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service on 24 April 1980, while participating in the attempt to rescue American hostages from Iran. As a part of a highly selected team consisting of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps elements, he selflessly dedicated himself to achieving the highest possible professional standards in order to liberate his fellow citizens, knowing full well the dangers of the mission and the complexities of the task, he consistently displayed consummate technical skill, devotion to duty and an intense will for mission success that was an example for all.
He nevertheless devoted his full energy and dedication to the opportunity to free the hostages and gave his last full measure of devotion in the hope that others may once again experience the benefits of liberty. The distinctive accomplishments of staff sergeant Johnson has reflected great credit upon himself, the United States Marine Corps & Dept. of Defense.
