The Algonquian name means, quite simply, "where there is a big expanse of water."
Some claim the lake contains a reptilian monster named Memphre (or Memphré), which has received sightings since the 18th century and continues on in local folklore in a vein similar to the Loch Ness Monster or the Lake Champlain monster. Memphre supposedly has been spotted as recently as 2000.
