The A. Polsky Co. department store was founded by Abraham Polsky in 1885. The firm moved to this building in 1930. The building was erected at a cost of $2,100,000 and helped initiate further commercial development along S Main St. The structure is an excellent example of Art Deco style. It was designed by Starret & Van Vleck. The first story of the building consists of three entries (the center has been closed) with display windows between them. The wall facings consist of grey terra-cotta with geometric ornamentation directly above margined and yellowish terra-cotta with curved chevrons on most of the building. The top windows are embellished with ornamentation above and below. Between windows are buttresses which extend above the building. The company ceased operation and closed the store in 1978. The building sat vacant for several years until it was acquired by the University of Akron. It now houses class rooms, book store, restaurant and archives.
