On a house at the edge of the hamlet of Petites Serennes is classic Zarbula sundial, painted in 1860, restored by J F Gavoty in 1886. Zarbula painted a few sundials over the Col de Var in the Alpes de Haute Provence. This sundial is in the upper Ubaye valley, on the narrow road from Saint Paul along the upper Ubaye valley. The style features on this dial are typical of Zarbula and similar to Maljasset sundial farther up the valley but this dial has a rooster. Some reports say Zarbula's original Imperial eagle was replaced by the rooster “coq plutôt republican” in the 1896 restoration.

When I arrived in 2009, the owner had just opened the shutter and covered part of the sundial. I asked to enter the property to take pictures. She agreed but was fed up with busloads of visitors, “les jeunesses” trampling the garden and lawn. This great sundial has become for the owners, an attractive nuisance. Please respect private property.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
