?When Pittsburgh’s original Buhl Planetarium opened in 1939, science-related art was an important part of the new institution. Sculptor Sidney Waugh was commissioned to produce several relief’s on the exterior of the building. The Planetarium was closed in 1991 and later repurposed as the Children's Museum.

The artist is mainly known for his accomplishments in his long time job as chief associate designer for Steuben Glass. He also did figural public sculpture including work at the National Archives and the Federal Reserve Board buildings.
