The Murphy Theater was built by then Chicago Cubs owner Charles Webb Murphy, who had called Wilmington home as a boy. Opened in July, 1918 after two years of construction, the Murphy became the center of the downtown business district, playing host to plays, vaudeville, lectures, minstrel shows, movies, high school graduations, and band concerts. Recently restored, the Murphy is now used as a concert and live performance venue.
