Zarbula Sundial 1840: Saint Veran, Queyras, France - Sundials on Waymarking.com

An original Zarbula sundial painted in 1840 decorates an old farmhouse at the edge of St Veran, Haut Forranes district. The sundial is one of the better known Zarbula sundials, often appearing on post cards and posters. The gnomon is missing and the dial declines a bit to the west. The dial features two exotic birds, and a Templar star. The dial is dated 1840 signed GZF and JP for the owner. The motto is “Solo Horare Do In Deo Spem Vides”. This seems to be a contraction, perhaps a play on words. My rough translation is “I give the time, you see hope in God alone”. SAF reference 0515707.

Pictures from 1907 show this dial had already lost the gnomon. There use to be a second Zarbula sundial on south east wall of this farmhouse. This is pictured in “Cadrans Solaires du Queyras, Balade a l’heure du soleil” by Gaelle et Pierre Putelat. There was also an old faded Zarbula sundial painted in 1840 on a building across from the church. This dial disappeared in 1994 based on a note and picture by Alain Ferreira.

This location also called point du Jour took me a while to find even with Alain Ferreira’s pictures. The town tourist office provided a map and good directions to find the dial. Go west along the main road and turn right at the old fountain, not the 1981 fountain. The location is west of the ski school. The GPS data should make things easier.
