Zarbula Sundials: Clot de Riou, Chateau Queyras, France - Sundials on Waymarking.com

Up a tiny rough narrow road from Chateau Queyras towards Souliers is an isolated old farmhouse. At a sharp turn and junction in the road, park and walk up to the farmyard with dogs, cats, chickens, old cars to the decrepit farmhouse and a couple of old sundials. The two undated, unsigned dials are attributed to Zarbula as they are typical of his early dials as he experimented with different artistic styles. The south west dial up under the eves is rectangular, a simple dial showing the coloured frame and hour lines. There are no good indications that this dial is by Zarbula but it has the normal colours and is associsted with the lower dial.

The lower south east facing dial has a horse shoe hour circle like the customs house at Cervieres. Click on the picture in the gallery to get a look at the details. Note the sign on the equinoctal line, an equal sign with a bump indicating the sun. Zarbula shows this on many of his dials, including nearby Arvieux, Le Coin. Look closely at the motto. It looks like the common motto, "Sans le soleil Je suis rein, et toi sans Dieu tu ne peu rein." (Without the sun, I am nothing, and you without God are less than nothing). The initials near the top are effaced but the fact that initials existed here indicates a Zarbula sundial.
