Most solar system models show either the relative sizes of the planets, or the relative distances of their orbits. This is a true-scale model that shows both.
Starting from the Charles Hayden Planetarium, the Community Solar System is anchored by an 11.6 ft diameter Sun. They used the same 1-to-400 million scale to place a set of planet sculptures in exhibit kiosks around the greater Boston area. Each location marks that planets' scaled distance from our model sun.
| Diameter | Distance |
Sun | 11.6 ft | |
Mercury | 0.5" | 483ft |
Venus | 1.2" | 901ft |
Earth | 1.3" | 0.24mi |
Mars | 0.7" | 0.36mi |
Jupiter | 14.3" | 1.23mi |
Saturn | 12" | 2.25mi |
Uranus | 5.1" | 4.53mi |
Neptune | 5.0" | 7.1mi |
Pluto | 0.23" | 9.3mi |

Visit Instructions:
To post a visit to a solar system model, please include at least one picture of the model, preferably from a different perspective from the other photos already taken. You and/or your GPS unit need not be in it. More photos are encouraged. Please also describe your visit in the log. If you cannot take a photo, then please describe your visit well enough so that readers can form a "mental picture".
