The Charging Bull was created by sculpture Arturo Di Modica in 1989. It was originally “illegally” place in front of the New York Stock Exchange on Broad Street on December 15, 1989. The Statue was almost immediately removed by city authorities, but in just a few short hours the statue had become an icon and because of the public outcry was so great, the city of New York granted Di Modica a temporary permit to place his statue at Bowling Green Park at the intersection of Broadway and State Streets. The sculpture was placed at its current location on December 19, 1989 and dedicated on December 20, 1989. That “temporary” permit remains today as the Charging Bull has become one of New York’s most popular tourist attractions.

The sculpture shows a bull leaning back on its haunches and with its head lowered and nostrils flared as if ready to charge. It is said to represent the “bullish” optimism of the stock market. The bull weighs about 7,000 pounds, stands almost 11-feet tall and measures 16-feet long.
