The area of Hopewell called City Point was the staging area for the Union Army near the end of the Civil War. The port nearby was the busiest port in the world just before the fall of Petersburg and Richmond in 1865.
Prior to the Union Army's occupation of City Point, Confederate forces used St. John's church as a signaling station. In 1864 Union forces invaded the area with little resistance, took control of the signaling station, and captured several Confederate signalmen. The church was used as a temporary prison until a federal prison called the Bull Ring was completed.
The church was refurbished in the 1890's and the adjacent Parish House was completed in 1933. The original church bell, purchased in 1843, sits on a pedestal in the church yard.
