A Civil War soldier stands holding the barrel of his rifle with both hands slightly to his proper right. The butt of his rifle is directly in front of his feet. There is a tree stump next to the soldier's proper right leg. He wears a brimmed hat, hip-length jacket, a scabbard at his proper left side, and a canteen at his proper right side. The sculpture is mounted atop a shaft with a three-tiered bottom.
The sculpture honors the Confederate soldiers of Carroll County, Georgia. The Annie Wheeler Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy sponsored the sculpture project. The McDaniel-Curtis Camp of Confederate Veterans raised much of the money for the sculpture project by selling a souvenir history of Carroll County. The sculpture was first located in Carollton's public square until 1958 when it was relocated to the grounds of Tanner Memorial Hospital. At some point, the sculpture was moved again to the front lawn of the Carroll County Courthouse.
