England’s Glory

There have been over thirty shipping disasters in and around Bluff Harbour. One of the best known was ‘England’s Glory’, a 751 tons barque which was wrecked near this point in 1881. In fine weather, ships came close inshore to pick up a pilot who guided them through the treacherous waters of the harbour mouth. On this occasion and unfortunate combination of wind and tide carried England’s Glory onto the rocks.
