This statue was made by artist Malvina Hoffman in 1936 and is called "The Struggle of Elemental Man".
In 1930, Stanley Field, the nephew of "The Field Museum" Founder, Marshall Field I, commissioned artist Malvina Hoffman to sculpt and cast bronze figures depicting the peoples of the world. "The Races of Mankind" is the largest singly-commissioned body of her work and consists of 104 busts, heads, and life-sized figures. In preparation for the exhibit, Hoffman and her husband, S. B. Grimson, traveled throughout the world to find authentic models for the sculptures. In 1936 Hoffman divorced Grimson and returned from Paris to her Sniffen Court residence and studio in New York. For the next three decades she continued to work out of her New York studio, producing a number of notable sculptures. On July 19, 1966, Hoffman died at her home in Manhattan.
