The Arts Centre is in Southbank, South of the Yarra River, just over the Princess Bridge from the Federation Wharf in the City Centre of Melbourne. The Arts Centre, listed in the Victorian Heritage Register, is a collection of 5 co-located venues: Hammer Hall, State Theatre, Playhouse, Fairfax Studio, and Galleries.

The building now known as Hammer Hall was opened in 1982; the spire, as it can be seen today with its fiber optic tubing, was completed in 1996.
