From the inventory: "The sculpture consists of two pieces of a fallen redwood tree --a portion of the root end of the tree and a portion of the tree's trunk. The root section rests on its side and is supported by a multipart concrete base which consists of one large rectangular block and three short, slender columns. The base is bolted to the root section with metal brackets. The trunk section rests on the ground next to the root section on a base made of three low rocks. Three seats have been carved into the trunk section --one on the east side, and two on the west side. The oval area surround the sculpture is covered with a layer of wood chips.

The sculpture was donated by Santa Rosa Plaza, the sculpture's original site since 1982. The tree stump, over 1,000 years old, was first found in the 1970s, scorched and gnarled, near Big Lagoon, north of Eureka, California. It was cut in half in order to be transported through a narrow stretch of cliffside highway. The sculpture is designed for touching, exploring, climbing, and resting, including sitting. The sculpture has had names (graffiti) carved into it, and the artist has expressed wishes that such carvings be left in place. IAS files contain a press release dated Nov. 2, 1993 from the Lawrence Hall of Science."

The plaque reads: "The fallen Giant. Is a gift from Santa Rosa Plaza, Santa Rosa, California to the Lawrence Hall of Science. 1993."
