In 1946, the General Electric Company began building 20 Little Joe Electric locomotives for the Soviet Union. The locomotives were nicknamed “Little Joe” after the Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin. When the US Department of State banned strategic shipments to the Soviet Union in October 1948, and the order was canceled. The Milwaukee Road ended up buying 12 of these locomotives and after modifying them, used them for 24 years before the electricity was turned off. Eleven of the twelve locomotives were scrapped, making Little Joe E70, only one remaining of the Milwaukee Road locomotives.
