The Zarbula sundial painted in 1871 is on an old farm house now subdivided into several residences. This seems to be an original in excellent condition as none of the normal references mention restoration. The motto, now effaced said in Latin "Vulnerat Omnes, Ultima Necat".(All Hours wound, the last kills)(Ref: Gatty) The Zarula style features are much like those on the nearby St Blaise dials painted the year before.

The equitorial line is prominant across this morning dial declining east of south. Zarbula generally included this construction line on his finished sundials. The is very useful for repositioning the gnomon as the sub-style ine is at right angles to the equitorial and through the base of the gnomon, Put a set square on the sun-style line, and rotate a 45° triangle with the hypotenuse on the vertical noon line until the vertex touches the perpendicular set square, That point set the correct orientation of the gnomon, due north, parallel to the earths axis and pointing at the north star. Zarbula used 45° as all his sundials are all very close to 45° latitude. Observing the gnomon and equatorial line you can see that most gnomons are now bent out of the correct position. Why? It looks good? It adjusts to clock time? Vandals did it? With the equatorial line available none of these excuses are valid.

Although the hamlet is listed as Briançon, Puy St André, Pierre Feu, the hamlet is only about 1 km south of St Blaise along a narrow road. Municipal boundaries can be confusing. SAF 0510701
