The view from the Rocking Stone was much better before North West Water filled the valley with non-indigenous fir trees. This view is framed through a gap in the trees.

This valley was flooded in 1894 to create Thirlmere reservoir. The trees covering the hillside followed later. The firs are being cut down at present by United Utilities.
Looking north towards the dam wall. Slope on right are the lower slopes of Helvellyn. The crag on the left is Raven Crag with Great How the conical bump.

There is a man made stepped path from the parking at Launchy Gill bridge. After a 20 minute ascent you arrive at a rough plateau, clear of trees.
