This nature reserve is on the hillside next to the River Tamar. The area was once a busy industrial mining area. The mines were closed in the mid 1800's and the vegetation has taken over since. There are some lovely walks in this area, and bird watching platform by the river.
Okel Tor is a Site of Specific Scientific Interest. It is an important habitat for wildlife - badgers and bats live amongst the mining remains and rare lichens and mosses grow on the mine spoil. Near the river, kingfishers and green woodpeckers can be seen, and you may even glimpse salmon leaping.
