The Clarke County Courthouse was built in 1955 replacing an early courthouse in Grove Hill. Clarke County was founded by the Mississippi Territorial legislature in 1812. The county seat was moved to Grove Hill then known as Macon in 1832 from Clarkesville. The county is named for Revolutionary War veteran and Georgia governor, General John Clarke.
