The military post that would eventually become known as Fort Bliss was established, relocated, controlled by both the United States and the Confederate States of America, and re-established several times from 1849-1893. On March 8, 1854, the post was named Fort Bliss for the Mexican-American War soldier William Wallace Smith Bliss. With an area of about 1,700 sq mi (4,400 km2), Fort Bliss is the Army's second-largest installation behind the adjacent White Sands Missile Range in NM. In 2005, the Pentagon recommended (as part of BRAC) transforming Fort Bliss into a heavy armor training post, to include approximately 11,500 new troops from the 1st Armored Division (which was stationed in Germany), as well as units from Fort Sill and Fort Hood. An estimated 15,918 military jobs and 384 civilian jobs would be transferred to Fort Bliss, bringing the total number of troops stationed at Fort Bliss under this alignment to a total of 35,000 by 2011. At the same time, BRAC also determined that the Air Defense Artillery (ADA) School at Fort Bliss was to move to Fort Sill, OK. Fort Bliss served as the TRADOC home of the Army's Air Defense Artillery from 1 July 1957 to 25 June 2009 when FORSCOM was officially granted authority for Fort Bliss.
