The downtown area of Carmel, Indiana is going through a thorough revitalization and rebuilding. This faded Champion Spark Plug sign surivives on the side of an old building that was once a garage. It is adjacent to a parking lot for all to see.
It was here long before I moved here in 1972 and painted by Carmichael Signs. I can find no history on Carmichael Signs.
I believe that this faded and irrelevant sign remains for another reason. For a while, Carmel would tout itself as the City of Champions based on the success of its high school teams. Over the years, with the growth of other areas of Hamilton County, the championships have been more evenly divided. This sign remains for a subtle reminder that they still feel that they are the Home of Champions.
