The Birge-Carnegie Library was formally opened to students in 1910, and served as the library of Victoria College until the opening of the E.J. Pratt Library in 1961. After a decade of being underused, the Birge-Carnegie building was renovated and re-opened as the new home of the United Church of Canada Archives in 1972, and in 1984 the Victoria University Archives moved in to share its quarters.
The University's archives are housed in the fireproof vault off the Librarian's Office. The Archives presently occupy the entire main floor and basement of the building; the second floor is currently used for professors' offices.
The Birge-Carnegie Library building has been and shall remain an architectural jewel of the University.
