Besides this being, as the elevation sign points out, the highest point in the Texas highway system, it is also the darkest. The reason for the road is to access the telescopes of the University of Texas McDonald Observatory, which is located in one of the darkest areas of the entire country. Looking out beyond the elevation sign, it is desolate country to say the least.
