Jerome Wheelock invented and patented his steam cylinder packing gaining recgonition amoung users of steam, that he found it necessary to manufacture the product.

He revolutionized the construction of the valves that admit steam to the cylinders, receiving the gold medal of progress at New York in 1875, the Centennial Medal at Philadelphis in 1876 and the grand prize at Paris in 1878. Born on June 20, 1834 and died in 1902, he left generous donations to Harvard University, Clark University and provided the funds for the Grafton Library.
