Elected first Webster County Sheriff in May 1860. Born circa 1802 in Franklin County, VA. Pioneer settler on the Right Fork of Holly River; married Hannah Clifton in 1825; had eight children. Accused of being a guerilla and thief by Union authorities [during the Civil War], he was tried by a military court and sentenced to be hanged in 1862. He was sent to military prison and believed to be part of a prisoner exchange later. He died in prison or at Wytheville (VA) while on the way home.
This historical marker was placed in 2003 by the Webster County Historical Society and the West Virginia Division of Archives and History.
