While First Christian Church was established in 1855, the present building dates from 1915. The Church is constructed in the Greek cross plan. It is designed in the Renaissance Revival style. It has a copper dome and three porticoes with Corinthian columns. It is a raised two-story, steel-framed structure with exterior bearing walls of cast-stone quarried in Lueders, Texas. The church proper occupies half of a city block. The primary entrance is via the Throckmorton Street facade, which faces northwest. The West 6th Street elevation of the church repeats the detailing of the entry front. Like the main entrance, the elevation of the southeast side is centered around a hexastyle Corinthian portico, although here there is no monumental staircase.
