Clayton County's first courthouse was a wooden structure built in 1861 and burned in 1864 during Sherman's March to the Sea. In 1869, this brick two-story building was built on the site of the 1861 courthouse. The new courthouse served Clayton County until 1898, when a new and larger courthouse was built a block to the south. At that point, the 1869 building became a Masonic lodge–a function it still serves today. (
