On Castle Island in the South Boston neighborhood of Boston, there is a pier that provides great views and an opportunity to fish in Boston Harbor. It is named the Lt. John J. McCorkle Fishing Pier. It is an L-shaped structure that extends at least 40 feet out into the water, then at least 150 feet along the shore in the water.
Lt. McCorkle was a part of the Boston Fire Department. According to a web site on the history of fires in Boston, on October 1, 1964, a fire broke out on Trumbull Street. McCorkle and four others perished when the building on fire collapsed.
Castle Island Reservation is a park managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The parking lot is at the east end of the William J. Day Boulevard. From there walk either path to the right of the ice cream stand, keeping the fort to your right. The pier is next to the Clipper Ship Monument to Donald McKey.
A news article on Boston.com reported that the waters around Castle Island "abound with flounder, cod, bluefish, and striped bass entering Boston Inner Harbor for much of the year, even winter." The article also reported that people have eaten the fish from the harbor and "never got sick." This may be a testament of how well the waters have cleared over years of work on modernizing the sewage treatment system.
