The 'Phanom Swai forest park' is a major public park in the Surin province of north eastern Thailand. There are a number of activities: walking trails, cooking facilities, nature sites, and a dozen or so Buddhist sites. The most significant Buddhist site is the 'Big Buddha' statue. Along the steps leading to the statue, and on the surrounding walls, are many bells. There is also one larger bell at the base of the steps. This bell is a larger version of the smaller bells. (I did not count the bells, I counted the steps, however, I would guesstimate ~300 bells.)
There were no info signs in English, but I was told that the site itself has long been a shrine (it is on a high point, overlooking the region), but that this particular construction was of recent origin. I can say that the work looked new, in fact there was still some work being done of the Buddha statue.
The bells are rung by visitors as they ascend and descend. When more than a few bells are rung the sound is very, very loud.
